CLINTON ROAD

Staten Island - NY.

Built around 1700, It started out as a one room farmhouse. In the mid 1800s it was remodeled into a 'Carpenter Gothic' cottage by John Austen. The home was named Clear Comfort.

Meant to be only a summer home, Alice Austen and her mother moved to Clear Comfort permantly after being abandoned by her father.

The home was bought by the city in 1975 and restored 10 years later. The garden was restored using photographs from the Austen family. They've opened it as a museum to celebrate Alice Austen & her photography.

The property is now a park, and is open from dusk to dawn. Located right on the water, with a beautiful view of the water and Verrazano Bridge. Also located right next door is the old NY Yacht Club (Mcfarlane-Bredt house) .. hopefully that will eventually be open along with the Austen home.
