This is one of those amazing architectural buildings that you have to wonder, "What were people thinking to let it fall into this state of disrepair?!"
Now surrounded by apartment complexes, a 91-home subdivision is planned for the remaining 28 acres, although it's still awaiting approval. Under this plan Halcyon Hall will be demolished, the building they once claimed to want to save.
The main building, built in the 1890's, was built as
a luxury hotel. In 1891, May Friend Bennett founded the Bennett School and in
1907 she purchased the building to become a finishing school for young woman.
The then vacant hotel, turned into Halcyon Hall. In 1922 an outdoor Greek
theater was added to the school to hold Greek Festivals every year.
In the 1950's or 60's it turned from a two year institution for young ladies,
into a 4 year college. Dorms, a science wing, library and refectory were added
onto the school. Unfortunately the additions seemed to drain the school, and the
school closed its doors in 1977.
The Tennis courts and archery range are still visible from the highway, as are the ruins of Halcyon Hall.
As beautiful as this location is, please exercise caution if you go visit.
There's apartments right next to it, as well as an old grounds keeper, all of
whom will call the cops if you even look at the building wrong. There's also
rumors of motion detectors inside.
