CLINTON ROAD

8/17/04
It should come as no surprise to anyone that this was always one of my favorite spots. Ive made countless trips here since i started making trips back in the summer of 03. The loop I had established through West Milford (Demons Alley, Clinton, Jungle Habitat, the one abandoned house, Monksville, Wanaque) Was like a weekly ritual for me, at one point coming up to Clinton like 2-3 times a week. Used to drive all the way down to Tory, pick her up, go all the way to Clinton, back to her house to drop her off and come home for work. So I guess it only makes sense that what i have to say in this update kinda saddens me.
No matter how many trips were made Clinton always had that feeling about it. That unsettling feeling, like something wasn't right. well in recent months this has been slipping away. The once dead silence is now replaced with the usual nightly chatter of woods and you can see animals wander about the road. And there's cops!? Something is definitely not right here, in the way of things being normal again.
In all the trips I've made up till this point I've seen 2 cops, and absolutely no animals until more recent months. I've stood in the woods at night with no cars around me and there is dead silence. Now animal sightings, and animal noise have become commonplace.
A few months ago an excavator appeared and there were signs of them cutting back the embankments on the sides of the road after Deadman's Curve. Ever since this the road has had a different feel to it... a normal feel. Well, now most of the road had been repaved. Gone are the bumps and rattles... gone are the potholes.... and gone is whatever was trapped here.
This became very apparent on a trip on 8/13/04 (friday the 13th. I didn't realize that it was Friday the 13th or else we would have gone to the highway instead) I was waved over by flashlight by one of two cops who had two patrol cars stopped in the road lights on, apparently they were stopping everyone that night. well the officer asked me a few questions and threatened to give me a summons but I lucked out and was able to use my knowledge of street names up there to give directions street by street back out to 287 from the north end along with a BS story about using 23 to Clinton etc... to cut from 80 to 287. (yes it works, but it is the most ass backwards way to go, considering 80 and 287 do cross one another) Upon seeing that I knew my way around he reluctantly had to let me go but he did make sure to have a third officer waiting for me on the Warwick Turnpike to make sure i was headed that way.
Anyway during the rest of the drive the typical vibe that Clinton gives wasn't there at all. Now I know its easy to assume that its not as "creepy" with the new pavement but I sincerely believe that's not where our explanation lies here. The road has changed ore than physically since the work on it had started, and I for one am convinced that they disturbed whatever was occupying the road. Now I don't claim to be an expert on the supernatural, but the way I see it this didn't necessarily mean that they uncovered anything physical while digging, not that I think it would be made well known if they did, but more that the work has disturbed whatever residual was causing the things we've felt and seen.
Either way Clinton road appears to have undergone a change. Not one that I'd like to see, but I have to assume its for the better of who/whatever's spirit was trapped here. Now id love to prove myself wrong here, but after this long of a time of the road being "dormant" we feel that its time to call this one as we see it.

Heh. Clinton Road. What to say on this one? More like what am I gonna try to not forget to say.
This is easily one of the most popular spots for night rides in NJ. And this is actually where I got my start. When I got back from college in the spring and wanted to start touring NJ I was finally able to drag some of my friends here (Chris Wilson and Megan) one night when we were bored. unfortunately that first night we got lost, and never made it, but it was pretty interesting. I had some kid step out in front of my car and try to block me in the dead end I had just turned around in..... I almost hit him when he sidestepped in front of me as I swerved around him.
The following night I went with the same bunch, and we actually found it. At that point it was the scariest thing I had ever seen/done, and I was hooked. The miles have just been piling on my car ever since. I've made a ridiculous number of trips there, and have brought almost everyone I know at some point.
Through my travels up and down this road I have seen allot of things. Some cool, some weird, some scary, and some just absolutely f***ed up
I have spent allot of time exploring this road, both during the day, and at night. One of the things that I had been looking for was the furnace. for some odd reason no matter how hard I looked I was unable to find it. one day we were headed northbound as usual, and out of no where I saw it. it was still summer, so its not like the foliage had died, or any other conditions were different, but out of no where there it was right in front of me. I still find it odd that I had passed by it so many times and never seen it.
Another night we were there I saw a pair of headlights coming up behind me really quickly. I knew that there wasn't much I could do if something was to happen, and I wasn't outrunning whoever it was, so I just set for the impact that I thought was imminent. The car swerved around me closer than I would ever wish another car to get to me faster than id ever have the balls to drive on that road. I have since seen the car in the area, so I know it was just a local messing with me, but it definitely scared the crap out of me at the time.
One night there was four of us in my car. We were headed northbound coming form 23, when all of a sudden Tory gasped, out of the corner of my eye I caught something.. I had a hard time getting a good look, since I was driving, but I will say I saw this much, it was a white form, in the shape of a human. it was off into the woods a little bit off to the right of us, but when I caught a glimpse of us it was far enough to the side that my headlights couldn't have lit it up so clearly. vie been  in the woods at night on this road, and I know how the visibility in them is, and how hard it is to make out shapes, let alone have something stand out like that. Whatever the hell it was there was something very wrong about it, and it definitely left a lasting impression, so much so that I actually had stayed away from the road for a little bit.
Clinton road is definitely creepy just by looks, but there is definitely something else to the road. I'm not sure what it is, but there is just so many weird things associated with this stretch of asphalt.

12/8/03   Despite what everyone says about how one day I'm going to find something that i dont want to, and despite the fact that I have found stuff I didn't want to i keep going back here looking for things and maybe even some answers.
We were up here looking for the spot where we saw the guy I wrote about last time, since both of us somehow couldn't remember for the lives of us where we saw this "thing" He/it still bothers both of us, cuz it makes no sense, but anyway....  We found what seemed to be the right spot, and stopped the car. no one got out, but we rolled the windows down to shine lights into the woods and get a better look at the area. in question. because the windows were down we were able to hear something move, which is weird because there is almost always dead silence on the road, (trust me, I was in the woods by dead man's curve with one other person while the rest my friends drove my car a good mile down the road, don't ask....) We tried to get a light on whatever had moved, and we heard it again someone managed to get a light on the spot this time just in time for all three of us to see what appeared to be the outline of a human drop into a crouch from a standing position. As dumb as I am I wasn't stupid enough to stay around and find out what was standing over us on the little bit of a hill to the right of us, so we got the hell out of there fast. Although another hasty retreat left even more questions unanswered.... although some days I get the feeling that I don't want to know anyway....
Its at least my thought that if it was the same "thing" as last time it would have shown itself as it had before, which leads me to believe that there's now two unknown things out there in the middle of these woods.
