CLINTON ROAD

Tottenville, Staten Island, NY...

The Conference House, also known as the Billop House, was built in 1680. It stands at the end of Hylan Blvd, which is now known as the Conference House Park.

Christopher Billop, a British naval captain, was granted a 932 acre property known as the Manor of Bentley in 1676. The home was enlarged in 1720 and by that point the land he owned was up to 1,600 acres.

The Billop House was the sight of the September 11th Staten Island Peace Conference in 1776.

After the Revolution, the house was confiscated by NY State to serve as a multi family dwelling, a rat poison factory, and a 19th century hotel. In 1929 it was taken over by the Conference house association.

For many years its been said to have ghostly presences. One is said to be a female, possibly a servant of Christopher Billop. She can be see signaling by a window. She was killed by a British man who believed she was helping Colonial soldiers in a plot to kidnap him.

Another ghost was seen by a child who once lived in the house. He was said to be a soldier, and the child was able to describe the ghost in great detail.
