The town of Monks was flooded as part of the Wanaque South Project. The most
interesting thing to see is the old road that runs literally through the
reservoir. There is a set of three plaques and a flagpole making up a small
monument on the damn, but I only know what the leftmost plaque says.
It is rumored that all of the buildings still stand at the
bottom of the 100 foot deep body of water. It is even rumored that Jacques
Cousteau took his mini sub in there, although I have not been able to confirm
anything other than he did enter a sunken town in Jersey with it during the
mid 1980's, but there's no evidence that it was Monksville.
