More then 300 years ago, Frederick Philipse was one of the wealthiest men in the
New York colony. He owned over 52,000 acres of land in Westchester County. He
built Philipsburg Manor to serve as a provisioning plantation for the Atlantic
sea trade.
Frederick was born in Holland in 1626. He acquired allot of his wealth by marrying the rich widow of Peter Rudolphus De Vries. After the death of his first wife he again married into money by marrying the daughter of Oloff S. Van Cortland.
The Old Dutch Church (Sleepy Hollow Church) was built by Philipse, Their family tomb is actually below the church itself.
The Philipses land was confiscated because of British sympathies during the American Revolution.
The village then was called Beekmantown after the new owners of Philipsburg manor and alot of the land.
