Salem Jail is listed as 'A Most Endangered Historic Resource' for MA. In 2004 it was listed by Historic Salem as a top priority, in 2005 it was upgraded from Endangered to Signs of Improvement. From my vision of his location, I don't see much improvement as of 2007. It doesn't look anywhere near ready for reuse.
The granite jail and Jailers house were completed in 1813, and the granite jail was enlarged in 1885. It wasn't completely vacated until 1991, It was one of the oldest correctional facilities still fulfilling its original functions.
The Jail Keepers house was severely damaged by a fire in 1999, but has had a new roof installed. We can vouch that the building really doesn't look severely fire damaged, so the improvement must have taken place here.
