While going to Sleepy Hollow, Sparta and other locations, We happened to be passing the infamous Sing Sing so we snapped a few pics.
Sing Sing is located in Ossining, NY .. Which was at one point was known as The Village of Sing Sing. The name was changed to Ossining in 1901 to avoid confusion of goods made in the village with prison made goods.
The prison building began in 1825 using the labor of convicts from Auburn prison (Cayuga county).
Sing Sing was New York's 3rd state prison, behind Newgate & Auburn. Built over an abandoned mining site... known as Silver Mine Farm, it offered a quarry for providing materials for construction of the prison, and afterwards sales. The on river location provided transport of the materials to NYC.. It also is the source of the phrase " sent up the river ".
In winter of 1826 only 60 of the proposed 800 cells were complete. It was difficult work and therefore progressed slowly. The building, which was modeled after Auburns north wing, Was completed in October 1828. Two more buildings were added later, containing hospital, kitchen and chapel. In 1831 a recreation yard was added. 1837 brought a new wing built for women prisoner, which lasted for less then 50 years before they closed it down.
Over 175 years later, the original structure still stands though it doesn't house prisoners. Talk of turning the building into a museum has started, so only time will tell if it will open to the public or not.
