I haven't had the time yet to fully research this
site, so we can give the truth about it unlike people just spreading stories.
At one point the monastery was a school, St Augustine Academy
or something along those lines. At one point it was also just a monastery for
monks.
The stories of the many sub basements.. who knows. no ones
been down there so what's the point in spreading what may or may not be the
truth ? The truth is.. the first basement is almost always flooded. so if that's
almost always flooded that would mean the ones under it are always flooded. The
rumors of up to 30 sub basements seem pretty false then, thinking there has to
be 30 floors completely under water in order for that first basement to have
that few inches to a foot it usually has.
Legend:
At one point one of the monks living there went insane. No
name is known or given in this story of that monk. He murdered all his brother
monks and dragged them down to the basement... or sub basement as some stories
on it go.
Its said he and his brother monks still haunt this monastery.
The monastery has been fully blocked off now. Its owned by
Wagner College, so maybe they're finally gonna knock it down. A lot of the
growth has been cut, and they've started to have some security there. The
windows are cemented shut now. And the only door not cemented has numerous
padlocks on it.
There's been numerous fires here.. so the floors aren't
steady really, and there is no more roof in most spots.
We spent some time looking for the basketball courts but we
couldn't find them. I guess they haven't cut that growth yet. While trying to
find that we did find another small building - shown in jays pics - not sure
what it was. Had too much growth on it, but it had two fences around it, that
didn't seem to have a gate out so who knows.
This place really isn't worth the drive if you don't live on
Staten Island, but it is really nice to look at/take pics of. Esp. the bell
tower.
Also around back in the courtyard is a small pond/pool type
thing. Its shaped at a cross.
When I get my scanner working - we'll add more pics of this
spot.
